During National APP Week, celebrated annually on the fourth week of September, USA Health recognizes the advanced practice providers practicing in various departments and specialties throughout the system.

Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists (CRNAs) are essential for patient care in the operating rooms. Certified Registered Nurse Practitioners (CRNPs) and Physician Assistants (PAs) provide care for patients from outpatient clinics to inpatient floors and ICUs, from the very young in the NICU and newborn nursery to all ages of life with internal medicine and specialties, and from family practice to surgical specialties.

Several events are scheduled throughout the week:

The APP Social and APP Council Quarterly Meeting will take place on Tuesday, Sept. 24, from 5 to 7 p.m. at Magnolia Manor, 1624 Springhill Avenue in Mobile. Come on out and mingle with other USA Health APPs as we celebrate National APP Week. There will be a Teams option for the APP Council Meeting for those unable to attend in person.

Feeding the Gulf Coast Food Drive boxes are located across the USA Health system from Sept. 24 to Oct. 4 to collect non-perishable items for Feeding the Gulf Coast. If your clinic is not in proximity to one of the main collection points and you would like to donate, please email Sharon Pelekanos at spelekanos@health.southalabama.edu to schedule a pick-up for the donations collected.

The APP Week Service Project at Ronald McDonald House Taste of Hope Family Meal Program will be Thursday, Sept. 26, from 5:30 to 7 p.m. to serve dinner to the families at 6 p.m. If you are unable to volunteer your time, please strongly consider donating to @USAAPP through PayPal to cover the cost of food being provided. Include a comment that the donation is for the Ronald McDonald Family Meal.

Compliance Q&A sessions: Multiple sessions are being offered across USA Health to discuss the QA Plan/Review, collaborative practice continuing education, and what should be readily available at your practice site. Ask questions, get answers, and chat with Sharon Pelekanos, director of APPs. Stop in during the sessions as your schedule allows. Please feel welcome to bring your breakfast or lunch. There is also a Teams option for those who are not in proximity to the in-person sessions. They include:

  • Providence Hospital: Teams virtual only, Tuesday, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.; Friday, 7 to 9 a.m.
  • Strada Patient Care Center, 1st floor conference room: Wednesday, 7:30 to 9 a.m.
  • University Hospital, cafe conference room: Wednesday, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
  • Children’s & Women’s Hospital CWEB Atlantis Room: Friday, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

APP Week gift: Cups will be distributed at the end of the week or the beginning of next week. Please be on the lookout for additional communication regarding delivery.

The APP Council Leadership thanks the APP Week Committee, Holley Collins, Mia McCoy, Emily Moore, for their hard work in making National APP Week 2024 successful. The council leadership also thanks the University of South Alabama campus administration and USA Health Physician Enterprise administration for their support.
