January safety behavior: attention to detail

During January, USA Health employees are encouraged to practice a new safety behavior.

Published Jan 3rd, 2023

As part of the Safety Starts with Me initiative, USA Health employees are encouraged to practice paying attention to detail by offering and accepting cross checks during the month of January.

“To cross check, watch out for each other, check each other’s work and be willing to be checked,” said Becky Pomrenke, R.N., M.S.N., patient safety manager for USA Health. “Individually, our reliability is limited, but when we combine our efforts, we greatly increase our reliability.”

To implement the safety tool of cross checking:

  • Offer to check the work of others.
  • Point out safety or service conditions someone might have missed.
  • Point out unintended slips and lapses.
  • Ask a team member to check your work.
  • Say, “Thanks for the cross check.”
