USA Health Providence holds annual Battle for the Paddle
This Providence Hospital tradition raises money to provide financial assistance to associates and staff in crisis through its 1854 Fund.
USA Health Providence Hospital hosted its annual Battle for the Paddle fundraiser recently to raise money for a very special cause. The tradition – normally held during National Hospital Week in May - was rescheduled for the Fall.
Typically, teams are identified by their matching T-shirts, so the decision was made to reschedule the event closer to Halloween, allowing teams to dress up in costumes.
The U.S. Coast Guard provided the canoes for the races for a small fee, which helps to keep the entry fee reasonable so more staff members can participate.
This year’s contest included physicians, vendors, and everyone in between. The teams paddled around the hospital’s pond during lunchtime to allow for other associates to attend and cheer them on.
Katrina Brown, DNP, RN, NE-BC, PCCN-K, chief nursing officer at USA Health Providence, said teams raised $400 for the 1854 Fund, which provides financial assistance to associates and staff in crisis. “The associates love being able to fundraise for our Providence family members,” she said.
