Black History Month events planned

This week, although Mardi Gras looks a bit different than usual, continue to be intentional at uncovering and illuminating Black stories and Black experiences this month and beyond.

Each year, this week is often filled with celebration and revelry as residents of Mobile and surrounding areas take to the streets to let the "good times roll." Whether this is your favorite time of the year or a time of the year that barely crosses your mind, the history of Mobile's Mardi Gras is synonymous with Black history and the stories of Black Mobilians.

One of the oldest Mardi Gras societies in Mobile is The Mobile Area Mardi Gras Association (MAMGA). Formally known as the Colored Carnival Association, MAMGA was founded in 1938 by Dr. Wilborne Russell, a respected dentist and civic leader. MAMGA held its first parade in 1939, presented its first Royal Court in 1940 and has been an active organization in Mobile ever since.

This week, although Mardi Gras looks a bit different than usual, continue to be intentional at uncovering and illuminating Black stories and Black experiences this month and beyond. Laissez le bons temps rouler (Let the good times roll)!
