The public is invited to the 3 p.m. ceremony at the Mitchell Center, which will be followed by an opportunity to meet with President Jo Bonner and his family on the arena floor.

President Jo Bonner will be inaugurated as the University of South Alabama’s fourth president on Friday, Sept. 23, at the USA Mitchell Center. The public is invited to the 3 p.m. ceremony, which will be followed by an opportunity to meet with the president and his family on the arena floor.

“This is an exciting time for our institution, as we celebrate our achievements and look forward to what we can accomplish. There is truly no better time to be part of the South Alabama family,” said Dr. Andi Kent, provost and executive vice president, and co-chair of the Presidential Inauguration Committee. “We invite the University community and friends to join us for this historic occasion.”

Scheduled speakers include Arlene Mitchell, chair pro tem of the USA Board of Trustees; U.S. Representative Terri Sewell of Alabama’s Seventh District; Dr. Jack Hawkins Jr., chancellor of Troy University; and Alabama Governor Kay Ivey. The installation will be led by Trustee Jimmy Shumock, and the USA Wind Ensemble and University Chorale will perform.

Parking will be available in the Mitchell Center parking lot and other nearby lots. Reserved handicapped parking will be located at the Mitchell Center.

During the inauguration week, there will be events including food drives, beautification efforts, a student showcase and social, and an employee and retiree picnic.

On Tuesday, Sept. 20, faculty, students and staff from Children’s & Women’s Hospital, Mitchell Cancer Institute, Strada Patient Care Center, Information Technology and all clinics are invited to the café at Children’s & Women’s for coffee and pastries with USA President Jo Bonner from 7 a.m. until 8:45 a.m.

On Wednesday, Sept. 21, faculty, students and staff from University Hospital, Mastin, Stanton Road Clinic, University OB-GYN and all other clinics are invited to the café at University Hospital for coffee and pastries with the president from 7 a.m. to 8:45 a.m.

On Thursday, Sept. 22, the University will host the Silver Endowed Presidential Lectureship at the Mitchell Center featuring Captain D. Michael Abrashoff, author of the New York Times best seller “It’s Your Ship.” The event is free and open to the public; tickets can be reserved online.
