Carole Boudreaux, M.D., associate dean for graduate medical education at the University of South Alabama College of Medicine, will retire Sept. 1 after 25 years with the university.

As director of the cytopathology division in the department of pathology for more than two decades, Boudreaux implemented multiple changes as the field advanced. As a leader in graduate medical education, she oversaw recent growth in USA’s 12 residency programs and 11 fellowship programs accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education.

“It has been a privilege to have spent my career at USA Health,” she said. “I'll fondly remember the journey with my pathology colleagues as we experienced the transformation of our field in extraordinary ways. But I have to say that my most rewarding experience has been my involvement in graduate medical education. Teaching, mentoring and interacting with the residents and fellows along the way has made coming to work over the years a lot of fun.”

Boudreaux was named associate dean for graduate medical education and the designated institutional official for GME in 2019, after serving as associate director or director of the pathology residency program for 13 years.

“Dr. Boudreaux’s dedication to excellence has helped ensure that we provide an optimal training environment and experience for our residents and fellows,” said John V. Marymont, M.D., M.B.A., vice president for medical affairs and dean of the USA College of Medicine. “On behalf of USA Health, I would like to thank her for her leadership and hard work.”

She received the Red Sash Faculty Recognition Award from multiple classes at the USA College of Medicine and was presented with several Faculty Recognition Awards conferred by pathology residents at USA Health.

“Carole is a devoted and caring leader, and she has a genuine passion for education and mentoring. She has made a very positive impact on so many people’s lives and on our organization as well,” said Owen Bailey, M.H.A., F.A.C.H.E., chief executive officer for USA Health and associate vice president for medical affairs. “We wish her well, and we will miss her, but her influence will remain with us.”

Boudreaux earned a medical degree from Louisiana State University School of Medicine in Shreveport, La., in 1990. She completed a residency in anatomic and clinical pathology at USA Health, where she was administrative chief resident from 1994 to 1995. She is certified in anatomic and clinical pathology by the American Board of Pathology with an added certification in cytopathology.

A retirement celebration in her honor will be held via Zoom on Thursday, Aug. 26, at 3 p.m. To join the meeting, go to https://southalabama.zoom.us/j/97636467445.
