The USA Health Integrative Health and Wellness Program is now leading hands-on cooking classes for USA and USA Health employees and their dependents at a reduced cost to encourage healthier eating habits, which can have numerous positive impacts on overall well-being.

“In today’s fast-paced work environment, learning how to make healthy meals and snacks is essential to promoting employee well-being and fostering a productive and engaged workforce,” said Robert Israel, M.D., FACS, internal medicine physician and Integrative Health and Wellness Program director. “One innovative employee benefit that can significantly enhance overall health and morale is taking hands-on healthy cooking classes.”

This benefit is offered to employees and their dependents on USA Choice and Select insurance plans. (This will also apply to the new USA Consumer Plans, which take effect on Jan. 1, 2025.) For the public, classes are $30 each. For employees on USA insurance plans, the classes are $10 each.

A number of USA Health and USA employees have already been taking advantage of this benefit, and community members are supporting the classes, too, Israel said.

Healthy cooking classes provide employees with the skills and knowledge to prepare nutritious meals, which helps encourage healthier eating habits both at home and in the workplace. Incorporating even small changes into your routine can have a significant impact on most of the major causes of illness and death that are prevalent in our community.

Classes are now being offered at the teaching kitchens at the University Commons in Mobile and the Mapp Campus in Fairhope. These hands-on cooking classes help demonstrate how easy preparing healthy food is and how tasty it can be.
