90,000 and counting: More shots given since vaccine fully approved last week

Vaccinations given by USA Health are up since the U.S. Food and Drug Administration fully approved the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine for use in those age 16 and older.

In the nine days following the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s full approval of the COVID-19 vaccine for use in those age 16 and older, USA Health has been administering more of the vaccine than in the weeks prior. Last week, more than 2,000 injections were given, said Natalie Fox, D.N.P., assistant administrator and chief nursing officer for USA Health Physicians Group.

Since Dec. 15, 2020, USA Health has administered 90,000 doses of the vaccine.

“We are excited to see more people getting the life-saving COVID-19 vaccine,” said Benjamin Estrada, M.D., professor and vice chair of pediatrics for the USA College of Medicine and a pediatric infectious diseases specialist with USA Health. “It’s so important for our patients and our colleagues to be as protected as possible from this devastating illness.”

The vaccine continues to be available under emergency use authorization for those age 12 through 15 and for the administration of a third dose in certain immunocompromised individuals.
