The popular battle-of-the-bands style contest Doc Rock – benefiting USA Health – was recognized as the philanthropic project of the year at the annual Business Alabama Awards held Feb. 28 in Birmingham.
Winners were selected in seven categories, and five lifetime achievement awards were also bestowed during the annual event. The winners are featured in the March 2025 edition of Business Alabama magazine.
“We are thrilled to be selected as the best philanthropic project of the year from a field of such worthwhile causes from across our state,” said Margaret Sullivan, vice president of development and alumni relations for the University of South Alabama. “As the leading academic health system on the Alabama Gulf Coast, our commitment to providing compassionate healthcare, quality medical training and leading-edge research has never been stronger.”
More than 350 people attended the 4th annual Doc Rock, held Jan. 30, at the Soul Kitchen in downtown Mobile. Five local bands with a connection to USA Health or the Frederick P. Whiddon College of Medicine competed in the event, raising money for designated health system entities previously selected by the musical acts. All proceeds support research and critical clinical needs.
The bands raised funds through voting donations and competed for awards to provide more support for their designated entities. A panel of judges along with crowd participation determined the evening’s award winners.
Business Alabama took nominations for the Business Alabama Awards, and a selection committee named a winner and finalists in each category.
