Patients, in most cases, are able to get a screening mammogram within days of requesting one.

Recognizing that mammograms are an important part of breast cancer detection, the USA Health Breast Center has implemented COVID-19 screening and social distancing measures to provide the safest possible environment for our patients.

“We do not want our patients to delay getting regular mammograms because of fear of COVID-19,” said Eduardo Rel, technical director of radiology at USA Health Children’s & Women’s Hospital, which oversees the breast center. “Working with our physician and administrative leadership, we’ve put in place recommended measures, such as screening for those entering the building, universal masking, frequent disinfecting and socially distanced waiting areas.”

Rel said that while social distancing has altered the center’s schedule, patients in most cases are able to get a screening mammogram within days of requesting one. “We feel these efforts will allow us to provide excellent mammography services to our patients while ensuring a safe environment,” he said.

The breast center, located at the Strada Patient Care Center at 1601 Center Street, provides a full range of imaging options with dedicated breast ultrasounds, 2D Selenia units and Hologic Genius 3D Tomosynthesis, which sets the standard for screening and diagnostic imaging.

A yearly screening mammogram is generally recommended for women 40 and older and does not require a physician’s order. If a screening mammogram shows an abnormality, a diagnostic mammogram can be used to get a more detailed image of the breast.

To request a mammogram, call 251-415-1660. The Breast Care Center is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
