USA Health expands interventional radiology services with the addition of C.J. Gaston, M.D.

C.J. Gaston, M.D., an interventional radiologist, recently joined the staff at USA Health, the Gulf Coast’s only academic health system. He is an assistant professor of radiology at the Frederick P. Whiddon College of Medicine at the University of South Alabama.

Interventional radiologists use various imaging modalities – including fluoroscopy, ultrasound, and CT scanning – to perform minimally invasive procedures that treat cancer, venous thromboembolic disease, portal hypertension, traumatic hemorrhage, spinal fractures, uterine fibroids, enlarged prostates, and many others.

Since completing residency training, Gaston worked in private practice as an interventional radiologist and diagnostic radiologist in Florida and Tennessee.

Gaston earned his medical degree from the Whiddon College of Medicine, where he was honored with the Steven Karl Teplick, M.D., FACR, Memorial Award.

"I first developed an interest in interventional radiology on my medical student rotations at USA Health with Dr. Brad Steffler,” Gaston said. “I look forward to helping to continue the robust IR services provided by our academic health system."

Gaston completed an independent residency in interventional radiology at the University of Florida in Gainesville, Florida, and two residencies – one for early specialization in interventional radiology and the other in diagnostic radiology – at the University of Tennessee Medical Center in Knoxville, Tennessee.

Interventional radiology is a subspecialty that uses minimally invasive image-guided procedures to diagnose and treat diseases. Using the least invasive techniques possible helps minimize risk for patients, maximize benefits, and improve health outcomes. These procedures often result in less pain and shorter recovery times compared with traditional therapeutic options.

Gaston will see patients at USA Health University Hospital and the Stanton Road Clinic.
