Help raise awareness about colorectal cancer by wearing blue on Friday, March 4.

Published Feb 22nd, 2022

The USA Health Mitchell Cancer Institute and the American Cancer Society invite you to join them and “Go Blue” for colorectal cancer awareness on Friday, March 4. Wearing blue on this day creates awareness that colorectal cancer is the second leading cause of cancer deaths in the United States when men and women are combined.

According to the ACS, it’s estimated that 1 in 3 adults ages 50 and older are not getting screened as recommended.

“If you have been postponing your screening during the pandemic, now is the time to make that appointment,” said Ahmed Abdalla, M.D., medical oncologist at the Mitchell Cancer Institute. “Getting regular screenings can detect colorectal cancer early, when treatment is most likely to be successful.”

Among the current ACS screening recommendations:

  • People at average risk of colorectal cancer should begin regular screenings at age 45.
  • Talk to your primary care provider or gastroenterologist about what type of screening is best for you: a stool-based test or a colonoscopy.
  • Know your family history and share it with your doctor to determine if you are at a higher risk for cancer.
