Peggy Gomez, manager of the senior center at USA Health Providence Hospital for 18 years and a dedicated advocate for others in the community, was inducted into the Alabama Department of Senior Services' Senior Citizens Hall of Fame as a permanent member last year.

Since 1983, it has honored Alabamians ages 60 and older for their outstanding contributions to the lives of older members of their communities. Those selected as permanent members of the Hall of Fame were formally recognized for their selfless advocacy and dedication to others at an official ceremony in Prattville.

Ten permanent members were inducted this year, including Gomez. In her role at Providence, she assisted seniors with bills and transportation to doctor appointments, and she conducted workshops that helped senior citizens live safe and fulfilling lives. Gomez assisted families and caregivers to ensure they received the information and assistance they needed.

For more than 24 years, she has served the senior community through programs such as the South Alabama Regional Planning Commission’s Alabama Silver-Haired Legislature, which helps promote the passage of laws offering an improved quality of life and ensuring their protection.

She has served on the Advisory Board of Senior Companions and St. Vincent de Paul Society. She has taught Living Well Alabama classes, Spanish for Seniors, and typing and computer courses. She also has volunteered numerous hours with a local food bank.

Among her other recognitions, Gomez was named Senior Center Manager of the Year by the South Alabama Area Agency on Aging and Most Valuable Employee by Providence Hospital.
