What a Great Catch: September 13
Great Catch awards are given to employees for instances in which they spoke up for safety, escalated concerns, and went above and beyond outside of the scope of their typical job duties. Each quarter, Safety MVPs are chosen for recognition from all Great Catch award winners for each USA Health facility.
Mary Ellen Bouvier, R.N., a nurse in the newborn nursery at Children’s & Women’s Hospital, was named a Great Catch winner.
The situation: The Spanish-speaking family of an infant had signed a consent for a procedure, and the consent was included in the infant’s medical chart.
What she did: Noting the language barrier and cultural concerns, Bouvier asked the family about the procedure. The parents adamantly refused it. The physician was notified, and the procedure was not performed.
The great catch: Bouvier’s critical thinking and use of the validate and verify technique prevented permanent harm to the patient.
