A visit to a gynecologist may be uncomfortable for some, especially for women 17 and younger. In an effort to help teens overcome anxiety about such visits, USA Health’s Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology has added new clinical space for the Pediatric and Adolescent Gynecology Division.

This division, conveniently housed on the third floor at the USA Health Strada Patient Care Center, seeks to create a more comfortable environment for patients 17 and under seeking care for gynecological issues – the first and only one of its kind in Mobile and Baldwin counties.

Under the leadership of Nicolette Holliday, M.D., and Tracy Roth, M.D., both obstetrician-gynecologists and educators of obstetrics and gynecology at the University of South Alabama College of Medicine, the division offers treatment for a variety of conditions such as pelvic pain, premenstrual syndrome, ovarian cysts or masses and endometriosis.

The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists recommends that girls have their first gynecologic visit between the ages of 13 and 15. With this information in mind, Holliday and Roth made it their mission to make visiting the OB-GYN as easy and comfortable as possible for these patients.

“Establishing a relationship with a gynecologist early helps young women learn to be proactive about their health,” Roth said. “Knowledge is power, and through education, these patients will be able to manage and control their reproductive health.”

The space – furnished with a leather sofa, coffee table and chair – provides a more inviting and less intimidating environment for patients as they receive sexual health education.

“It is our goal to provide effective communication and compassionate care for our patients,” Holliday said. “We seek to create an environment where our patients feel at ease when they come to us with any gynecological issues.”

Adolescent patients 17 and younger will be seen at the USA Health Strada Patient Care Center in their new offices on the third floor. Appointments for young patients will be scheduled on the second and fourth Tuesday of each month. Holliday and Roth also will continue to see their established adult patients.

To schedule an appointment, call the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at (251) 415-1496.
