USA Health employees can help protect patient privacy by not accessing medical records unless it is part of their job function.
“With cases of COVID-19 on the rise, we want to continue to respect the privacy of our patients,” said Linda Hudson, chief HIPAA compliance officer for USA Health. “USA Health workforce members should only use and disclose the minimum amount of protected health information necessary for them to perform their job duties.”
USA Health monitors the access of medical records through the privacy monitoring service FairWarning®, which has developed alerts specifically to monitor the records of patients tested and/or treated for COVID-19.
Hudson reminds staff that access audits are being used to contact clinical, ancillary and other staff members who have had contact with a patient undergoing testing for COVID-19 patient. Ensuring that records are accurate is crucial to timely reporting, she said.
