Candice Holliday, J.D., M.D., assistant professor of obstetrics and gynecology at the University of South Alabama, was recently offered admission to the Loyola University Chicago School of Law Master of Laws (LLM) Health Law program, bringing her past and present together for a promising future.

After practicing law for a few years, Holliday decided to pursue another career path in women’s health. Now, after completing medical school, residency training and her first year as an attending physician, Holliday is excited to be a student again. “I believe that, particularly in medicine, you have to be a lifelong learner as the evidence-based guidelines are always evolving,” she said. “With the current political environment, it is very clear that the legal aspect of practicing medicine is also something constantly evolving. I, and my department, want to provide the very best evidence-based care to our patients, and so I am very lucky to be supported in my educational endeavors by Dr. Mimi Munn, professor and chair of obstetrics and gynecology at USA Health.”

Holliday said she is hopeful that having this extra degree will prove beneficial for not only the department of OB/GYN, but for USA Health as a whole. “A Health Law LLM is an additional degree that attorneys can acquire to learn specifically about the complex legal, regulatory, political, ethical and economic aspects of healthcare delivery,” she added. “After completion of the Health Law LLM, I hope to participate in some manner with the administrative side of USA Health. That said, I am still 100% dedicated to my clinical practice, teaching and research.”

The LLM program is through an online platform. Holliday will continue to see patients while earning the new degree.
