Wellness@Work: how to set (or re-set) goals for the new year

Whether it is a resolution or simply an important goal you are setting for yourself, here are some tips to set yourself up for success so that you can achieve them.

We’re one month into 2023! Did you make a New Year’s resolution this year? If so, how is it going? Check out these stats from a recent government survey. While 41% of Americans make resolutions to change something each year, only 9% will feel like they reached the goal that they set for themselves at the end of the year!

Whether it is a resolution or simply an important goal you are setting for yourself, here are some tips to set yourself up for success so that you can achieve them. First, do your research on the subject. Make sure you know what you’re getting into!

New diet or workout plan? More assertive communication plan? Increasing library time? Do more than just say the words. Examine the realistic expectations for a successful outcome.

Next, write down “S-M-T” goals. Effective goals are specific, measurable and time-bound. Proper research from your first step will help you with specificity and precision of your goal, as well as the measurability.

Finally, set up a certain time period for yourself to meet your goal. For example, “I want to complete 8,500 steps per day for the walking challenge this month.” “I want to lose 15 pounds in the next two months.” “I want to apply for licensure certification by June 1.”

There are often sub-goals that must be attained for the larger goal to be met, such as acquiring a pedometer, identifying a diet or workout plan, or completing the licensure certification preliminary paperwork.

Take action! Getting started is the most important step required once you have set your goal. Track your progress and repeat as you go. Give yourself small rewards and encouragement along the way.

How did this work for you? Look at the good and the bad. Review the process and make improvements for next time. Be proud of your successes and share these victories with others!
