For its annual community service project, the USA Health Department of Internal Medicine collected 1,296 items – surpassing its goal by more than 1,000 items – for Whitley Elementary School in Prichard.

Stanton Road Clinic won for the most items collected within internal medicine. Donations included hand sanitizer, wipes and disinfectants, binders and other school supplies.

“The department consistently shows me how much they care about the people in our community, but this year was different. They smashed the 250-item goal,” said Brittany Brown, director of operations for internal medicine. “When you build a team with the same goals – to serve to the best of our ability – you reap awesome outcomes for our organization and the patients we serve.”

Brown said Whitley Elementary, a 10-minute drive from University Hospital, was selected as this year’s community partner because many of its students and teachers are patients in our healthcare system. Past partners include Penelope House and Feeding the Gulf Coast.

“This group has accomplished so many great things, but having a giving group of individuals is the most rewarding,” Brown said. “I'm very proud of internal medicine and the individuals who make up this department.”
