USA Health has named James E. Jewell director of security for the health system.

Jewell brings the experience of a 25-year career in the Federal Bureau of Investigation, where he most recently was special agent in charge in the Mobile Division. He also has served in the U.S. Navy and worked as a certified public accountant.

In his new role, Jewell will oversee security for USA Health to include University Hospital, Children’s & Women’s Hospital, the Strada Patient Care Center, the Mitchell Cancer Institute, Baldwin County locations and other physician office buildings.

“My main goal is to ensure that the USA Health security team provides the highest level of customer service to employees, patients and visitors within the USA Health footprint,” Jewell said.

He will oversee security staff as they enforce USA Health policy on hospital campuses and work with USA police, who are sworn law enforcement officers with arrest authority.

“I am excited for our security team to have someone with James’ experience and knowledge base joining USA Health,” said Rosemary White, M.B.A., assistant administrator for USA Health. “We are looking forward to him taking USA Health security to even greater heights.”

Jewell joined the FBI in 1996 as a special agent in the Houston Division. He rose through the ranks, working as a supervisory special agent at FBI headquarters in Washington D.C., and at the Field Intelligence Group in the Charlotte Division before being promoted to assistant special agent in charge of the Charlotte Division’s Operations Branch in 2011.

Jewell spent four years as section chief in the Training Division at the FBI Academy in Quantico, Va., from 2014 to 2018 before moving to Mobile.

Jewell served as an officer in the U.S. Navy in both reserve and active-duty assignments from 1988 to 1996. He was awarded the Navy Achievement Medal – Combat Theatre in 1991 for his efforts during Operation Provide Comfort while he was assigned to the USS Deyo, a Spruance-class destroyer.

He also worked as a senior litigation and financial advising consultant for Coopers & Lybrand in Birmingham and Ernst & Young in New Orleans. Jewell holds a bachelor’s degree in accounting from the University of Alabama and a master’s degree in accounting from Louisiana State University.
