King chosen as Safety MVP

Jeannie King, R.N., a nurse in the surgical navigation center at Children’s & Women’s Hospital, was chosen as the Safety MVP for the quarter at Children’s & Women’s Hospital. She received the use of a parking space and other gifts.

King was chosen for the award because of her quick action while interviewing a patient by phone for an upcoming surgery. Near the end of the interview, the patient began slurring his words. To rule out a poor phone connection, King hung up and called back, and a friend of the patient answered, confirming the patient’s slurred speech. King urged him to call 911. The patient was taken to an emergency room and transferred to University Hospital, where a stroke code was initiated, and the patient received treatment.

Safety MVPs are chosen from among the Great Catch winners for each quarter.
