Dr. Frank Greiner Employee Award in Radiology winner named

Besides his willingness to help patients and his colleagues, Kendrick McCants has been commended for “speaking up for patient safety, having a wonderful attitude, and a big heart.”

Once a year – on Talk Like a Pirate Day – an award is bestowed on an unsuspecting team member at USA Health who embodies the qualities that were most appreciated by the late radiologist Frank Greiner, M.D. Those attributes include excellence in work; fearlessness to do what is right; willingness to go the extra mile to perform the spirit, and not just the letter, of their duties; and a sense of humor.

This Sept. 19, the Dr. Frank Greiner Employee Award in Radiology was given to Kendrick McCants, a patient transport aide at Children’s & Women’s Hospital. He received a cash prize, and his name was added to a plaque that hangs in the radiology department in the Mastin building.

McCants was nominated by Angie Sherwood, a CT technologist at Children’s & Women’s Hospital, for being “friendly, witty, extremely efficient, and professional” and someone who always goes beyond his assigned duties.

“When transporting a patient to radiology, he will bring the person directly to us, ensuring a proper handoff by making sure the patient gets on the table with any necessary help,” noted Sherwood in her nomination. “He will get them a blanket, if needed, and ask us if there is anything else we need.” He also doesn’t mind staying for a few minutes if the patient needs to be immediately returned, she said.

When he transports a patient to have a CT scan, he will help get the patient on the table in the proper position before we even enter the room, Sherwood said. Besides his willingness to help patients and his colleagues, McCants has been commended for “speaking up for patient safety, having a wonderful attitude, and a big heart."

This award was presented earlier this month by Suzy Figarola, M.D., professor, and chair of radiology; Maxey Roberts, managing director of the USA Foundation; and Eduardo Rel, technical director for radiology at Children’s & Women’s Hospital. Francis “Frank” Greiner, M.D., was a professor of radiology and chief of neuroradiology at the Frederick P. Whiddon College of Medicine at the University of South Alabama. He died in 2015.
