Accreditation from the ACHC reflects a dedication and commitment to meeting the standards that facilitate a higher level of performance and patient care.

The USA Health Mitchell Cancer Institute’s retail pharmacy has achieved its second accreditation from the Accreditation Commission for Health Care (ACHC) for specialty pharmacy with a distinction in oncology.

Accreditation from the ACHC reflects a dedication and commitment to meeting the standards that facilitate a higher level of performance and patient care. Pharmacies achieve accreditation by demonstrating compliance with national standards. About 490 specialty pharmacies in the U.S. hold ACHC accreditation.

“This accreditation demonstrates the quality of services that the MCI provides for our patients and our physicians,” said Brittney Carden, Pharm.D., pharmacy manager. “Increasingly, oncologists are prescribing oral chemotherapy, which requires special handling, real-time monitoring and more support than most other prescription drugs. The majority of chemotherapy drugs that are in the pipeline for FDA approval are oral, which validates the significance of having a specialty pharmacy that is accredited.”

Opened in 2018, the MCI Pharmacy fills prescriptions for oral oncolytics, or chemotherapy taken by mouth, as well as supportive medications for cancer patients. It is located at the main Mitchell Cancer Institute office in Mobile but also serves patients at MCI’s Fairhope and Springhill locations.

The pharmacy achieved its first ACHC accreditation in 2018 and earned accreditation from the Utilization Review Accreditation Commission (URAC) in 2020.
