USA Health adds new short-term disability insurance coverage for employees in response to the 2020 Employee Engagement Survey.

Published Sep 21st, 2021

Starting Oct. 1, USA Health employees will have a new benefit - short-term disability insurance coverage at no cost to them.

Short-term disability insurance provides weekly benefits to help pay for everyday expenses for employees who are unable to work for a short time because of a covered disability. Examples can include an injury, surgery, serious illness or childbirth.

Benefits-eligible USA Health, Health Care Management (HCM) and HCA clinical faculty and staff are eligible for the new benefit.

“We know how difficult it can be when a serious illness or injury keeps someone out of work for an extended period of time,” said Andrea Rosler, M.S.H.A., M.B.A., chief human resources officer for USA Health. “This new insurance benefit can help pay for everyday needs, and we are proud to say that it is being provided at no cost to our employees.”

The new short-term disability insurance was added as an employee benefit in response to the 2020 Employee Engagement Survey. The health system is partnering with Sun Life as the insurance provider for short-term disability insurance. Sun Life also will be the University of South Alabama and USA Health’s new provider for long-term disability insurance and life insurance.

Under the coverage, an employee with an approved claim can receive weekly benefits of 60 percent of that person’s total weekly earnings up to $1,000 per week. Benefits can begin eight days from the injury or illness, and last up to 12 weeks if the employee is unable to work because of the disability.

Employees are required to use 40 hours of PTO prior to receiving short-term disability benefits. PTO may be used to replace up to 40 percent of the weekly wage not provided by benefits. In addition, Teachers’ Retirement System income does not affect weekly disability benefits.

According to Sun Life, the top short-term disability claims include maternity, musculoskeletal injury, digestive disorders and cancer.
