National Rural Health Association selects Janel Lowman for competitive fellowship program
“I look forward to using the knowledge and skills I gain from this program to advocate for improved healthcare services in rural communities, especially those in Mobile and along the Gulf Coast,” said Janel Lowman.
USA Health Mitchell Cancer Institute (MCI) is proud to announce Janel Lowman, MHA, senior manager of community outreach, has been selected to join the 2025-2026 Rural Health Fellows Program—an initiative of the National Rural Health Association (NRHA). The prestigious fellowship recognizes individuals committed to advancing rural healthcare through leadership, advocacy and promoting health equity.
“The opportunity to work alongside other passionate leaders dedicated to rural health and health equity is truly inspiring,” said Lowman. “I look forward to using the knowledge and skills I gain from this program to advocate for improved healthcare services in rural communities, especially those in Mobile and along the Gulf Coast.”
The Rural Health Fellows Program is an intensive leadership development opportunity that aims to cultivate a network of dedicated leaders who will engage rural communities and contribute to the improvement of healthcare access and equity in underserved areas. Fellows participate in a series of in-person training sessions, conference calls and mentorship activities that prepare them to assume roles in NRHA, rural health advocacy groups and legislative bodies.
Lowman was selected as one of 15 individuals nationwide to join the program. Throughout the fellowship, she will take part in key training sessions in Washington, D.C., and Atlanta.
As part of the program, Lowman will contribute to an action project team, where participants collaborate to address critical issues facing rural health and develop actionable solutions.
“We are so proud of Janel and her acceptance into the Rural Health Fellowship Program, where she will further develop her skills building and training a strong community health worker network for our entire outreach area across lower Alabama,” said Jennifer Y. Pierce, M.D., MPH, gynecologic oncologist and division director of the MCI's Cancer Control and Prevention program. “This recognition reflects her strong commitment to improving healthcare in rural communities, and we’re excited to see the positive impact she will continue to make at MCI, in our community, and beyond.”
Lowman has been with USA Health for more than 25 years and has consistently demonstrated a commitment to improving healthcare access and outcomes in rural communities.
