One of Us: Beth Abston, CTRS
One of Us is a series that provides a glimpse into the working world of USA Health, one employee at a time.
What is your job title, and what does it entail?
I am a Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist and work as part of the Mapp Child and Family Life Program. The role of the Child Life program is to normalize the hospital environment for pediatric patients and their families through play and age-appropriate diagnosis education, as well as procedural and emotional support.
What is your favorite or most rewarding part of your position?
The opportunity to make what can be a very stressful situation for families a little bit easier.
What originally made you want to join USA Health?
I had the opportunity to volunteer in the Treehouse, the hospital playroom, in college and hoped that one day I would be able to work in this environment full time.
How long have you been with USA Health?
Almost 10 years
What has working with USA Health taught you?
It has taught me that children are incredibly resilient.
Do you have any goals that you want to achieve in the health system?
I would very much like to see, and be part of, a pediatric palliative care team.
What is your favorite hobby or pastime outside of work?
Watching my children play travel baseball and travel softball.
What advice would you give to people who want to work in the health system?
I have thoroughly enjoyed working for USA Health and would encourage those interested to apply.
