This week, meet Kailan Cooper, a nurse at University Hospital’s Neuroscience Intensive Care Unit. Cooper was recently recognized as a three-time Kudos winner during the month of October for her outstanding patient care.
What the job title of your position and what does it entail?
I am a registered nurse in the NSICU (Neuroscience Intensive Care Unit). I provide daily care for patients who have had strokes, brain injuries, spine injuries, or anything involving neurological impairment.
What is your favorite or most rewarding part of your position?
I love being able to help people and celebrate their improvements, big and small. Everyone in my unit is extremely kind and helpful. They are like family.
What originally made you want to join USA Health?
I really love the community that USA Health has to offer.
How long have you been with USA Health?
Since July 2020.
What has working with USA Health taught you?
How to better care for patients and also that there are no stupid questions. I have enjoyed that USA is a teaching hospital. There is always something new to learn, and it’s a blessing having mentors who not only have great expertise, but are also eager to impart what they know.
Do you have any goals that you want to achieve in the health system?
I eventually want to obtain my master's degree to become a nurse practitioner.
What is your favorite hobby or pastime outside of work?
Going to the gym and spending time with my family and friends.
Do you have any advice for people who want to work in the health system?
Never lose your passion or compassion for healthcare or for your patients. I make it a point to care for each person how I would hope to be cared for, or how I would want my family members cared for if they were the ones being treated.
