What’s your job title and what does it entail?
I am the associate manager of patient supportive care services at USA Health Mitchell Cancer Institute. My position gives me the opportunity to use my team-building skills while assisting with research projects that are managed by the Cancer Control and Prevention team. However, my job responsibilities go beyond research and involve assisting oncology patients with barriers to care while they are on their cancer journey. For example, assisting patients who are in need of transportation help by distributing Shell gas gift cards that are provided by the American Cancer Society Community Transportation Grant. Also, I help assist with the monthly meetings of the Breast Friends Forever, Sisterhood of Survivorship and General Cancer Support Groups and the Lunch and Learn Cancer Care Education meetings. I also help manage and organize donations to a resource room where patients have access to wigs, prosthesis, bras and educational reading material.

What is your favorite or most rewarding part of your position?
My favorite part of this position is being able to witness the connection and relationships that support group members have with one another during the monthly support group meetings. The friendships they have built is great to see. Also, it is a rewarding experience to witness patients express their appreciation of having access to donated items that are located in the resource room.

What made you want to join USA Health?
In 2012, a loved one of mine passed away from Ewing Sarcoma and it started a passion of mine to want to give back to individuals who are on their cancer journey. I have always had the belief that the average person spends the majority of their day at work. Therefore, if I wanted to make a difference I would have to give back in a professional career. I am thrilled and honored that USA Health is giving me the opportunity to fulfill my goal.

How long have you been with USA Health?
I have been employed with USA Health since December 8, 2020.

What has working with USA Health taught you?
Working for USA Health has given me the opportunity to work with a team such as the Cancer Control and Prevention team, nurse navigators, clinical nurses, and oncologists. I have learned the importance of how effective communication is essential in helping patients have their needs addressed and receive exceptional patient care services.

Do you have any goals that you want to achieve in the health system?
In my position, I would like to provide opportunities for all oncology patients to be able to connect with one another and build friendships by getting involved in activities that encourage physical, emotional and educational support.

What is your favorite hobby or pastime outside of work?
My favorite hobbies include spending time outdoors such as gardening, hiking or canoeing. On Sunday’s, I love going to a restaurant in downtown Mobile to eat brunch and then visiting the charming Crescent Theatre to watch a movie.

Do you have any advice for people that want to work in the health system?
My advice for those who would like to work in the health system is to always treat a patient as if they were your own family member in every interaction that you have with them.
