One of Us: Vanessa McMillian
One of Us is a series that provides a glimpse into the working world of USA Health, one employee at a time.
What is your job title and what does it entail?
My role is administrative assistant at the Mitchell Cancer Institute. My duties are to provide admin support. I also support the departments of radiation oncology, and cancer control and prevention.
What is your favorite or most rewarding part of your position?
Being here has opened my eyes even more to what I already knew about cancer patients. Hearing the bell ring (signaling the end of treatment) just makes my heart smile. You don’t know the patient, but you just rejoice with them. I just say, “Thank you Lord for one more life saved.” It’s a wonderful feeling.
What originally made you want to join USA Health?
I was looking for a job in 2016. I didn’t know I would end up at the MCI, but I am grateful that I am here. MCI gives hope. My mom is a cancer survivor (23 years); so, as a caregiver, I understand how important the support groups are at MCI. I am so grateful to be part of the Mitchell Cancer Institute team!
How long have you been with USA Health?
Five years
What has working with USA Health taught you?
I have learned more about cancer and cancer prevention here at the MCI. By sharing the information that I learned with my family, friends and community, I can keep me, my family and our community healthy.
What is your favorite hobby or pastime outside of work?
Hanging out with my parents. I call it “hanging out with the old people,” but I enjoy it, and I know I am blessed to have them.
Do you have any advice for people who want to work in the health system?
It’s a great feeling. Try it!
