To ensure players are healthy and prepared for fall sports, USA Health’s Department of Orthopaedic Surgery performed physical evaluations for more than 400 Mobile County Public Schools athletes on July 15 at the Strada Patient Care Center.

The athletes, who arrived in waves beginning at 8 a.m., had their vital signs checked including heart and respiratory rates, blood pressure and vision. USA Health providers also evaluated high school players who may have more serious conditions such as sickle cell disease.

James Slauterbeck, M.D., professor and chair of orthopaedic surgery, said it is extremely important for athletes to have these screenings before the season starts. “We want to make sure they have adequately prepared themselves over the summer and didn’t get hurt to ensure they can start their seasons off effectively and stay safe throughout the year,” he said.

Students from every public high school in Mobile County took part in the event. View more photos here.
