USA Health departments competed in the Safety Holiday Decorating Contest illustrating the safety technique SORT, an acronym that can guide someone to think critically and determine a course of action. The entries’ themes ranged from the Grinch and Buddy the Elf to “A Christmas Story” and Elf on the Shelf.

Contestants were scored according to three criteria: their use of SORT, originality and overall appearance.

At Children’s & Women’s Hospital, the Women’s Complex Care unit took first place with “Surfin’ with SORT in WCCU,” while Mother-Baby placed second with “A SORT of Christmas Story.”

At University Hospital, the winning departments created video presentations to illustrate SORT. Clinical Trials came in first with a video about organizing workspaces featuring Buddy the Elf. Trauma placed second with a video about a non-working fireplace, also featuring Buddy the Elf.

First-place winners will receive a lunch delivery, while second-place winners will receive doughnuts and coffee.

The acronym SORT stands for:

  • Statement
  • Options
  • Rule out
  • Take action and test
