Safety training is almost complete with about 200 staff members needing to attend a class by Aug. 1. The training is mandatory for all staff, including physicians, residents, fellows and advanced practice providers.

USA Health celebrated a safety milestone after training 4,816 employees in six months as part of the Safety Starts With Me initiative.

At a recent event, awards were presented by Chief Medical Officer Michael Chang, M.D., to the patient safety team, including Rebecca Pomrenke, R.N., M.S.N., patient safety manager; and Jennifer Lovitte, R.N., M.S.N., and Megan Dickinson, R.N., M.S.N., patient safety coordinators. Trainers Rachel Rentschler, M.P.A., and Allen Broome, Pharm.D., who led the most classes, also were recognized.

“Training so many thousands of employees in this short period is an impressive feat. I would like to congratulate the patient safety team and all of those who participated,” said Sharon Ezelle, R.N., M.S.N., USA Health quality and safety director. “We are continuing our journey to becoming a high reliability organization.”

USA Health’s Safety Starts With Me initiative was launched in July 2021 with the goal of creating a culture of safety and adopting a mindset of zero harm.

Ezelle pointed out that more than 200 staff members at USA Health have not completed the mandatory safety training and will need to attend a class by Monday, Aug. 1. The training is required for all staff, including physicians, residents, fellows and advanced practice providers.

Safety training will be provided on the following dates and times, either at the Atlantis Room, behind Children & Women’s Hospital, or in the first-floor conference room at Strada Patient Care Center. No pre-registration is necessary. All sessions are from 1 to 4 p.m.

  • Monday, July 11: Strada Conference Room
  • Monday, July 18: Atlantis Room
  • Monday, July 25: Strada Conference Room 
  • Monday, Aug. 1: Atlantis Room

“Healthcare workers have to process and carry many emotions as they care for patients who are experiencing disease and traumatic events,” said Kim Crawford Meeks, manager of the Spiritual Care and Counseling Department. “Safe and sacred spaces to aid in the processing of emotions are vital to our health and ability to sustain this type of work.”
