“Thank you for being part of the heartbeat of USA Health. You are seen, heard, known, and appreciated. The care you continue to provide does not go unnoticed.” -Kim Crawford-Meeks, USA Health chaplain

Students at St. Paul’s Episcopal School, led by fourth-grader Bunt Howard, used 25 pounds of clay to create more than 300 thumbprint hearts to show appreciation for staff members at USA Health.

Bunt and his mom, Lisa Howard, delivered a big box of the handmade hearts on Valentine’s Day to Children’s & Women’s Hospital. USA Health’s new chaplain, Kim Crawford-Meeks, distributed the keepsakes to staff members on duty across several locations of the health system, also sharing a blessing printed on slips of paper.

It read, in part: “Thank you for being part of the heartbeat of USA Health. You are seen, heard, known, and appreciated. The care you continue to provide does not go unnoticed.”

Bunt is the son of Harrison Howard, M.D., a surgical oncologist at the Mitchell Cancer Institute. The idea to create the clay hearts emerged when he was looking for a service project for Red Ribbon Week. Lisa Howard brought the clay to her son’s school and worked with groups of third- and fourth-graders to create the gifts. Later, she used a kiln to fire the tiny pieces of art.

“I wanted to bless the healthcare workers,” Bunt said, “and bring them joy.”
