Q: What is Botox/Dysport?
A: Botox is a brand name of a toxin made by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum used to treat fine lines and wrinkles. There are other brands such as Dysport that work similarly. Botox blocks the acetylcholine receptors, which inhibits muscle contraction. The contraction of the muscle over time is what creates deep-set wrinkles, also commonly referred to as expression lines. Botox is most often used on forehead lines, crow's feet (lines around the eye) and wrinkles between the eyebrows.
Q: Who is the best candidate for Botox/Dysport?
A: Anyone between the ages of 18 and 80. Botox can be used as a preventative measure for younger ages to reduce the risk of creating a deep-set wrinkle. If treated properly, Botox can help correct and improve the appearance of deep lines for older ages.
Q: Why would someone want Botox/Dysport?
A: Anyone who is concerned about resting lines that are visible on the skin without making any expression likely would benefit from Botox. Some younger patients appreciate the preventative aspect.
Q: What is the process?
A: The appointment lasts only a few minutes. After a thorough evaluation by the surgeon, a small needle is used to inject Botox or Dysport into specific muscles with only minor discomfort. It generally takes seven to 14 days to take full effect.
