What is Botox and Dysport?

Learn more about employee skin care specials with this Q & A with Dr. Kimberly Donnellan, ENT/facial plastic and reconstructive surgeon at USA Health, and Bailey Luloff, licensed esthetician and skin care consultant at USA Health.

Q: What is Botox/Dysport?

A: Botox is a brand name of a toxin made by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum used to treat fine lines and wrinkles. There are other brands, such as Dysport, that work similarly. Botox blocks acetylcholine receptors which inhibits muscle contraction. The contraction of the muscle over time is what creates deep-set wrinkles, also commonly referred to as expression lines. Botox is most often used on forehead lines, crow's feet (lines around the eye) and wrinkles between the eyebrows.

Q: Who is the best candidate for Botox/Dysport?

A: Anyone between the ages of 18 and 80. Botox can be used as a preventive measure for younger ages to reduce the risk of creating deep-set wrinkles. If treated properly, Botox can help to correct and improve the appearance of deep lines for older adults.

Q: Why would someone want Botox/Dysport?

A: Anyone who is concerned about resting lines that are visible on the skin without making any expression would likely benefit from Botox. Some younger patients appreciate the preventive aspect.

Q: What is the process?

A: The appointment only lasts a few minutes. After a thorough evaluation by the surgeon, a small needle is used to inject Botox into specific muscles with only minor discomfort. It generally takes 7 to 14 days for the injections to take full effect.
