Employees at the University of South Alabama and USA Health are being invited to participate in the USA-United Way of Southwest Alabama’s 2020 fundraising campaign to help families in need and nonprofit organizations in the Mobile area. This year’s campaign concludes on Oct. 21.

USA began participating in the annual United Way fundraising campaign in 1998 and has since raised nearly $5.2 million. These contributions have helped nearly 50 partner programs in southwest Alabama.

In past campaigns, cards were given to staff to make donations and to detail the impact that these donations could make within the community. This year, during the COVID-19 pandemic, videos are being emailed to staff instead. These emails also provide a link to a donation page for United Way.

Employees also can choose to make automatic donations from their paychecks. A contribution as small as $2 or $3 per pay period could culminate to make a positive impact on local communities.

This year’s campaign comes at an especially crucial time. Many families in Mobile and its surrounding areas have been affected by Hurricane Sally and COVID-19. As the holiday season approaches, donations would provide a considerable amount of help to families in need and local nonprofit organizations during this time.

“As a victim of Hurricane Katrina, I understand all too well the financial and emotional impacts of natural disasters on our communities,” said Lisa Mestas, chief nursing officer at USA Health and co-chair of USA’s United Way campaign. “Experiencing a hurricane in the midst of a worldwide pandemic presents, for many of our neighbors, insurmountable challenges. The power of the community should never be underestimated. Even small gifts can add up and make a difference in others’ lives, right here in Mobile.”
