USA Health honored its nurses, medical assistants and patient care assistants this week by hosting daily events to celebrate their work.

More than 1,200 registered and licensed practical nurses, as well as medical assistants and patient care assistants, are being celebrated at USA Health this week.

“In honor of the birth of Florence Nightingale, the American Nurses Association has deemed 2020 as ‘The Year of the Nurse,’ and there could not have been a more appropriate designation,” said Lisa Mestas, chief nursing officer for USA Health. “Words cannot express the pride I have in my fellow colleagues during these times.”

Mestas said that COVID-19 has brought a new level of challenges that extend work life stressors into the homes of nurses, virtually eliminating the opportunity to recharge. “The compassion, collaboration, professionalism and dedication to excellence I have witnessed from our USA Health nurses as well as nurses across the nation exemplify why nurses are the most trusted profession year after year,” she said. “I am humbled and honored to work with them.”

Florence Nightingale, born May 12, 1820, is considered the founder of modern nursing.

To honor nurses and those who support them, USA Health hospitals and clinics are planning daily events all week, from popcorn snacks and breakfasts to prize drawings and gift cards.
