More than 400 COVID-19 vaccines given at community-based clinic
More than 400 people received a vaccination during a drive-through clinic held at Yorktown Missionary Baptist Church.
Three weeks ago, Janice Williams received her first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine during a community –based clinic at Yorktown Missionary Baptist Church. Now, Williams – who received her second dose at the same location – is proud to say she is fully vaccinated.
A resident of the Plateau community, Williams said she heard about the drive-through clinic by word of mouth. “The City of Mobile and USA Health made it so easy for members of our community to do our part and get vaccinated,” she said. “All of my neighbors either drove or walked to the clinic. We are so grateful.”
Williams was one of more than 400 residents who received injections of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine from USA Health staff members during a drive-through clinic at the church as part of a community-based partnership with area leaders, USA Health and the City of Mobile.
Yorktown Missionary Baptist Church was among the first community-based clinics to offer vaccinations through this partnership at the end of February for residents who needed the vaccine.
Yorktown’s minister, the Rev. Christopher Williams, said keeping his congregation healthy was his motivation for hosting the clinic at his church. “Since the pandemic, we have been holding our church service outside in the parking lot,” he said. “Offering the vaccine in the same way made absolute sense, so I jumped on the opportunity.”
Since Dec. 15, 2020, USA Health has provided more than 40,000 doses of the COVID-19 vaccine to those deemed eligible through the Alabama Department of Public Health. Up to 1,000 doses of vaccine are given each day, Monday through Friday, at the Mobile Civic Center Arena in downtown Mobile.
USA Health’s online registry is a fast and efficient way for eligible people to arrange for appointments to be vaccinated at our vaccination center at the Mobile Civic Center.
