Volunteer medical staff members with USA Health are planning a mission trip to Peru, one of the nation's hardest hit by the COVID-19 pandemic. Staff will provide vaccines and other healthcare services to residents in Cusco, Peru and surrounding villages.

This trip originally was planned in 2021 but was postponed because of the rise of the Delta variant and increased hospitalizations along the Gulf Coast. Peru also has been severely impacted by the pandemic, sustaining one of the worst death rates per capita of any nation, with more than 600 deaths from the virus for every 100,000 residents.

"Global humanitarian efforts to protect people from infectious diseases are so important," said Natalie Fox, D.N.P., executive director of academic practices for USA Health. "One thing we know is that the virus continues to change and mutate. This medical mission trip is vital so we can help those who may not otherwise have access to the vaccine."

A team of providers, including many of the professionals who established and are operating USA Health’s drive-through vaccination center, will travel to Peru in late March to provide COVID-19 vaccinations and more. While the COVID vaccines were provided by the United States government, other supplies are still needed. Donations will fund travel, food and lodging for the team, and the purchase of syringes, protective gear, bandages and other medical supplies.
