It is important to keep stress in the proper perspective and know that it can burn us if we lose that perspective.

I have worked in healthcare for more than 20 years. I have been a student for many years, as well, completing high school, two graduate degrees, and “all but dissertation” of a doctoral degree. During that time, I have developed a love-hate relationship with stress.

It has been a positive, motivating force at times, and a raging wildfire at other times. Regardless, it is important to keep it in the proper perspective and know that it can burn us if we lose that perspective.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, these are signs that stress is taking an unhealthy toll on you:

  • Feeling irritated, angry or in denial
  • Feeling uncertain, nervous or anxious
  • Feeling helpless or powerless
  • Lacking motivation
  • Feeling tired, overwhelmed or burned out
  • Feeling sad or depressed
  • Having trouble sleeping
  • Having trouble concentrating

If stress is affecting you in a negative way, reach out to your friends, family or supervisor and let them know how it is affecting you. USA Health’s Employee Assistance Program is an excellent resource and can be accessed by calling 251-410-7664 or emailing eapinfo@health.southalabama.edu.

In addition, Mental Health America has free, confidential screenings available. Get help today and don’t let stress burn you.
