A healthy workforce is a happier, more productive one. That’s the idea behind one of the newest benefits available to USA and USA Health employees and their dependents on USA Choice and Select insurance plans. (This will also apply to the new USA Consumer Plans, which take effect in January 1, 2025.)

Through this benefit, hands-on cooking classes and cooking demonstrations are available at a reduced cost for many USA and USA Health employees and dependents to encourage healthier eating habits that have numerous positive impacts on overall well-being.

These cooking classes are available now at the teaching kitchens at the University Commons in Mobile and the Mapp Family Campus in Fairhope. To learn more and sign up, click here.

Healthy eating offers a wide range of benefits that can positively impact both physical and mental well-being. Some of the key benefits include:

  • Improved nutritional status. A balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, and healthy fats provides essential vitamins and minerals that support overall health.
  • Weight management. Healthy eating helps maintain a healthy weight or support weight loss. Whole, nutrient-dense foods are generally lower in calories and higher in fiber, helping to reduce hunger and promote satiety.
  • Reduced risk of chronic diseases. A diet rich in whole foods can lower the risk of chronic conditions such as heart disease, diabetes, obesity, and certain types of cancer.
  • Enhanced mental health. Proper nutrition can have a positive impact on mental well-being. Diets high in omega-3 fatty acids, vitamins, and antioxidants may help improve mood and reduce the risk of depression and anxiety.
  • Better digestive health. A fiber-rich diet helps promote healthy digestion and can prevent issues like constipation, irritable bowel syndrome, and other digestive disorders.
  • Increased energy levels. Eating a balanced diet provides the body with the necessary nutrients to produce energy, leading to improved stamina and vitality throughout the day.
  • Stronger immune system. A nutrient-dense diet supports a healthy immune system, which can help protect against infections and illnesses.
  • Improved skin health. Nutrients such as vitamins A, C, and E, along with healthy fats, can contribute to better skin health, helping to reduce acne and signs of aging.
  • Better sleep quality. Certain foods can promote more restful sleep by supporting the production of sleep-regulating hormones, while heavy or processed foods may disrupt sleep.
  • Enhanced brain function. Nutrients found in foods such as fatty fish, leafy greens, and nuts can support cognitive function, memory, and concentration.
  • Stronger bones and teeth. Consuming adequate calcium and vitamin D through foods like dairy, leafy greens, and fortified products contributes to strong bones and dental health.
  • Healthier relationships with food. Emphasizing healthy eating encourages a more mindful approach to food, promoting a better relationship with food and reducing the likelihood of disordered eating habits.

By incorporating healthy eating habits into your lifestyle, you can experience these benefits and likely improve your overall quality of life.
