If you are too hurt or sick to make your own medical decisions, what would you want your healthcare providers to do?

Addressing this scenario is one of the goals of National Healthcare Decisions Day, Monday, April 17. On this day, USA Health employees, patients and others can participate in a daylong event at University Hospital to learn more about creating an advance directive, which can communicate their wishes regarding future medical care.

Members of the USA Health Social Work Department and Spiritual Care Department will be available in the Café Conference Room on the second floor from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. to answer questions about advance directives, also known as living wills, and to witness forms.

“Advance directives are helpful to have in place for all of us in order to have our wishes honored if we are in a position where we are not able to communicate for ourselves,” said USA Health Chaplain Kim Crawford-Meeks, who manages the Spiritual Care Department.

For more information on advance directives or to print a copy for yourself or a patient, visit the Alabama Hospital Association advance directives webpage.
