USA Health a match for 12 Whiddon College of Medicine students
Members of the Class of 2024 opened their envelopes, announced their matches, and pinned their residency locations on a map at Match Day this past Friday.
Last Friday, 74 senior medical students from the Frederick P. Whiddon College of Medicine gathered at the USA Mitchell Center for Match Day, the annual event in which future physicians across North America simultaneously learn where and in what specialties they will complete their residency training.
Supported by their families, faculty and staff, members of the Class of 2024 opened their envelopes and proudly announced their matches before pinning their residency locations on a map. The moment was climactic for a class that entered medical school when a pandemic was raging across the country and world.
“It’s been a journey,” said Carey Johnson, who has served as class president all four years. “For us to be the 2020 COVID class coming through, we had so many different changes. We’ve had to adjust and adapt.”
Johnson, who matched in pediatrics at USA Health, added, “It’s been so good to see everybody here finally reach the culmination, to reach the heights of where they wanted to go.”
This year, 18 students from the Whiddon College of Medicine matched in the state of Alabama – 12 of whom matched at USA Health.
