The Mobile County Board of Health meets monthly to review Mobile County Health Department activities and to provide guidance to Alabama’s oldest public health agency.

Danuel J. Laan, M.D., FACS, FASMBS, director of bariatric surgery at USA Health Providence Hospital, was elected chairman of the Mobile County Board of Health for 2024 at the board’s January meeting. 

The board meets monthly to review Mobile County Health Department activities and to provide guidance to Alabama’s oldest public health agency. It includes six physicians serving on the Medical Society of Mobile County’s Board of Censors and the current president of the Mobile County Commission.

Other USA Health physicians returning as board members include emergency medicine physician Michael L. Sternberg, M.D; family medicine physician Minh Pham, M.D.; and internal medicine physician De’Arco R. McCreary, M.D. Last year, Sternberg served as board chairman while Pham served as secretary.

Also at the meeting, Michael Chang, M.D., chief medical officer and associate vice president for medical affairs, was one of two outgoing board members who received plaques in appreciation from Mobile County Health Officer Kevin Philip Michaels, M.D.
