Osama Abdul-Rahim, M.D., assistant professor of radiology at the University of South Alabama College of Medicine and an interventional radiologist with USA Health, presented the July Med School Café lecture.

Patrick Patten, M.D. has been appointed assistant professor of radiology at the University of South Alabama College of Medicine. Patten, an interventional radiologist, will practice at both USA Health University Hospital and USA Health Children’s & Women’s Hospital.

In the 1980s, Dr. Robert Gilbert was studying to become a pathologist like his father when he decided to follow a different path. He loved science but wanted something more. “I realized I preferred to see patients and take care of them,” he said.

Alan Whaley, D.B.A., has been named chief operating officer for USA Health. Working in a dyad relationship with Chief Medical Officer Michael Chang, M.D., Whaley will work with leadership throughout the health system to plan and develop operational budgets and strategic initiatives that support USA Health’s mission, vision and values with well-balanced clinical, academic and research programs.

USA Health University Hospital has earned the American Heart Association’s Get With The Guidelines-Heart Failure Gold Plus Quality Achievement Award and is recognized on the AHA’s Target: Heart Failure Honor Roll. University Hospital has received the Gold Plus Quality Achievement for two consecutive years and is the first hospital in Alabama to achieve the Heart Failure Gold Plus with Target: Honor Roll Award recognition level.

When Chelsea Burns found out her two-week-old son, Landen, had sickle cell disease, she felt blindsided. “There were a lot of emotions,” she said, recalling the day more than 10 years ago. “The doctor handed me a box of tissue.”
