Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) at USA Health
Located at USA Health Children’s & Women’s Hospital, our pediatric intensive care unit is the only facility of its kind in the region. Our PICU team provides the highest level of care for children who are critically ill or injured, including:
- An infant, child or adolescent experiencing an acute illness or injury
- Worsening of a chronic condition affecting one or more body systems
- A child with a potentially life-threatening condition
- A child with a disease that requires highly skilled medical and nursing care
The PICU is staffed by board-certified pediatric intensivists, doctors who are specialty-trained in pediatric critical care medicine. In addition, the experienced nurses in our PICU also have special training to work in this environment.
PICU Transport
Since the PICU at Children's & Women's Hospital is the only one of its kind in the area, critically ill and injured children are often transported from other facilities. That trip is made possible in our Care For Kids pediatric transport vehicle, specially designed, equipped and staffed for transporting children from neighboring hospitals and areas from as far as 100 miles away. To coordinate PICU transport, physicians should call (866) 872-7428 (1-866-USA-PICU).
Visiting the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit
The PICU is located on the second floor of USA Health Children's & Women's Hospital. Parents and families are encouraged to spend time with their child. However, only two visitors per patient are allowed in the unit at one time. After 8:30 p.m., only immediate family members are allowed to visit. Anyone wanting to visit a PICU patient who is not related to the patient must obtain special permission from the parents. All visitors must call the PICU from the phone at the entrance of the unit before entering. Visitation is restricted during shift changes and may also be restricted during morning rounds. For more information, call (251) 415-1546.
