About University Hospital

USA Health University Hospital is an acute care facility serving as the major referral center for southwest Alabama, southeast Mississippi and portions of northwest Florida. We offer centers for Level I trauma, burn, stroke, cardiovascular disease and sickle cell disease. As a teaching and research facility for the Frederick P. Whiddon College of Medicine at the University of South Alabama, University Hospital plays a key role in the development of new technology, treatments and training of future healthcare professionals. The hospital also includes outpatient care services such as cardiology, medicine and surgery.

University Hospital is a member of the American Hospital Association.

Services Offered at University Hospital

Adult Infectious Disease

Our infectious disease specialists treat patients with various disorders caused by germs. Infectious diseases include measles and chickenpox—which can be prevented by vaccines—meningitis, Lyme disease, malaria, E.coli and HIV/AIDS.

Adult Intensive Care

The intensive care unit (ICU) is, in some ways, an extensive of the Fanny Meisler Trauma Center. Once a trauma patient’s immediate needs have been addressed and their health is stabilized, they can be transferred to our adult ICU for further critical care.

Bariatric Surgery

Bariatric surgery, also known as weight-loss surgery, includes a variety of procedures to help patients lose weight and improve their overall health.

Burn Care

At the Arnold Luterman Regional Burn Center, we provide the most advanced and comprehensive burn care on the Gulf Coast.

Capsule Endoscopy

With this minimally invasive technology—also known as camera in a pill—doctors examine and diagnose disorders of the gastrointestinal tract without using sedation.

Cardio-Oncology

With this program, our cardiology team help patients undergoing cancer treatment to manage medications that can affect the heart.

Cardiology Outpatient Testing

At our outpatient testing facility, patients undergo stress tests, cardiac monitoring, Doppler testing to measure blood flow through arteries and veins, and other diagnostic procedures.

Colonoscopy

Colonoscopy is a procedure to search the colon and rectum for possible growths or other irregularities.

Colorectal Surgery

Includes surgical treatment of the colon, rectum and anus.

Critical Care

Our critical care team excels in treating patients with life-threatening illnesses.

Da Vinci SP robot-assisted surgery

The da Vinci SP (single port) robot-assisted surgical system allows for a single port of entry with the potential for less pain and shorter stays.

Endocrine Surgery

Focuses on using surgical procedures to treat diseases of the adrenal gland, thyroid and parathyroid.

Endoscopic Ultrasound

An endoscopic ultrasound lets our clinicians look at your upper and lower digestive tract.

ENT/Otolaryngology Surgery

This surgery is performed in the head or neck area. It is commonly known as ENT—ear, nose and throat—surgery.

Epilepsy Treatment Program

Through SouthCEP, our comprehensive epilepsy program, USA Health neurologists offer diagnosis, medical management, surgery and investigative therapies to patients with epilepsy.

Esophageal Surgery for GERD

Individuals suffering from gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) typically take medication to treat negative symptoms of the disease. To actually repair the defect that causes GERD requires a surgical procedure.

Foot and Ankle Care

We treat foot and ankle conditions of all kinds including fractures, arthritis, bunions, plantar fasciitis and conditions related to poor circulation.

Gastrointestinal Surgery

Also known as GI surgery, this is an area of surgical expertise that focuses on the gastrointestinal tract and related organs.

Interventional Cardiology

Our interventional cardiologists use advanced catheter technology to manage problems associated with heart disease.

Interventional Radiology

USA Health interventional radiologists are using state-of-the-art technology to treat patients with minimally invasive procedures that help lessen the effects of strokes.

Laparoscopic Gastric Bypass

Laparoscopic gastric bypass is a minimally invasive surgical procedure that reduces the size of a patient’s stomach with a bypass of the lower part of the stomach.

Laparoscopic Sleeve Gastrectomy

Laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy is a surgical procedure in which the majority of the stomach is removed, and a smaller stomach is created with the remaining tube or “sleeve.”

LINX Procedure

Patients suffering from GERD may be candidates for the LINX procedure. This treatment uses a magnetic device to treat the weak esophageal muscles that cause the disorder.

Neurology

Orthopaedic Surgery

Our orthopedic surgeons offer both surgical and nonsurgical treatment options for musculoskeletal conditions and injuries.

Orthopaedic Trauma

Orthopaedic trauma happens as the result of a severe and sudden injury to bones, muscles or ligaments. Our orthopedic traumatologists care for patients with the most severe injuries.

Parkinson's and Movement Disorders

We use a multidisciplinary approach to treat movement disorders such as Parkinson’s disease, Huntington’s disease, tremors, dystonia, Tourette’s syndrome and restless leg syndrome.

Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery

Our plastic and reconstructive surgeons specialize in the surgical repair, replacement or reconstruction of physical defects in the body.

Pulmonology

Pulmonology is the study and treatment of lung and respiratory system disorders. USA Health offers diagnostic evaluations for patients with a wide variety of lung diseases.

Rheumatology

Rheumatologists diagnose, evaluate and treat patients with chronic conditions such as arthritis that affect joints and connective tissue.

Sickle Cell Care

Sickle cell disease is an inherited disorder that causes red blood cells to lose their ability to carry oxygen. We offer comprehensive sickle cell care for children and adults.

Small Bowel Endoscopy

Sports Medicine

Whether you’re a weekend warrior or a serious athlete, you'll find a team of orthopaedists experienced in treating and helping to prevent sports-related injuries and conditions such as stress fractures, sprains, strains and tears.

Surgical Oncology

Our expert surgeons use advance procedures to remove and lessen the impact of malignant masses and tumors.

Swallow Studies

A swallow study allows us to diagnose digestive health issues such as ulcers, tumors, swallowing disorders, polyps, GERD and hiatal hernias.

Trauma Surgery

At University Hospital's Level I Fanny Meisler Trauma Center our surgeons treat people with injuries resulting from traumatic events such as car accidents.

Urology

Using the latest technology and techniques, USA Health urologists diagnose and treat conditions related to the bladder, urethra, ureters, kidneys and adrenal glands.

Volumetric Laser Endomicroscopy

Volumetric laser endomicroscopy allows our clinicians to evaluate and diagnose conditions of the esophagus, such as Barrett's esophagus.

Arnold Luterman Regional Burn Center is the only facility in the region providing burn care to patients from the time of their injury to recovery. The burn team is comprised of physicians specializing in burn surgery, infectious disease, plastic surgery, trauma surgery, orthopaedic surgery, psychiatry and anesthesiology. Our Burn Center research team is nationally and internationally recognized, particularly in the development of artificial skin. Trauma Center

Fanny Meisler Trauma Center

The Fanny Meisler Trauma Center at USA Health is the only Level I trauma center (prevention through recovery with advanced surgical care) in southwest Alabama, indicating the highest level of care a facility can provide. We believe that the highest level of care is the only level of care anyone would expect to receive in a life-threatening situation. No matter what day a patient arrives, we have a board-certified trauma surgeon in-house 24 hours a day. Every trauma patient who is brought in is assigned a designated trauma team composed of a trauma surgeon, emergency physician, surgical residents, trauma nurse coordinator, emergency department nurses, radiologic technologist, respiratory therapists, and an anesthesiologist or nurse anesthetist. Epilepsy Monitoring Unit

We offer a unique level of epilepsy care and treatment in part because of our Epilepsy Monitoring Unit (EMU) at University Hospital. Plan Your Visit to the University Hospital

If you plan to stay at University Hospital overnight for any period of time, there are some items that you should bring along with you. Consider bringing:

  • A list of your current medications: Include name, strength of your medication and the times when you take your medication; please include any over-the-counter medications and any vitamins or natural supplements
  • Important telephone numbers for family, friends and physicians who have previously treated you
  • Insurance card and personal identification
  • Pen and paper in order to write down questions for your physician or nurse
  • Robe, slippers, underwear, socks
  • Toothbrush, toothpaste, deodorant
  • Dentures and denture case, if needed
  • Glasses or contact lenses, with cases, if needed
  • Reading material
  • A phone charger

We do not recommend bringing along items of value, such as expensive jewelry or large sums of money. Also, please do not bring electric shavers or hair dryers.
